Our Story
What is Cri du Chat/5p-?
Cri du Chat, also known as 5P-, is a rare genetic condition that impacts one in 50,000 babies each year. This condition is caused by a terminal deletion of a portion of the short arm of the fifth chromosome, also known as the P arm. Individuals with this condition experience physical and intellectual disabilities. The name Cri du Chat translates to "Cry of the Cat" because a characteristic of this syndrome is a high pitched cry. Many children experience low muscle tone, feeding difficulties, and developmental delays.
